“We want to make sure we’re doing what’s best for the survivors, families and citizens of Tumbler Ridge. The school board got a clear message that students, teachers and staff want a new school location,” Eby said.
Nine people were killed and dozens injured after gunman Jesse Van Rootselaar opened fire during classes in February. He was later found dead, with self-inflicted injuries. Police found six bodies at the school, while two more victims were discovered in a house connected to the attacker.
The massacre deeply shook Canada. A few days after the tragedy, Eby promised at the commemoration that the students would never have to return to the school building where the attack took place.
The school will be demolished during the summer and a new one will be built in another location in this remote mountain town. Part of the students are currently attending classes in temporary prefabricated classrooms set up on school grounds.
Eby said the provincial and federal governments will help get the new school built as soon as possible. He added that the community has shown great courage and resilience in recent months after the tragedy that struck this mining town.
