Paderborn’s footballers have qualified for the Bundesliga for only the third time in their history after beating Wolfsburg in two playoff games.
After the first match ended 0-0, Paderborn beat Wolfsburg 2-1 after extra time in front of their fans.
Paderborn is up to now was a member of the Bundesliga twice. However, in both cases (2014/15 and 2019/20) he returned to the lower ranks after only one season.
As a reminder, Wolfsburg took 16th place in the elite class of German football, which led to a playoff with the third-placed club of the 2nd league, Paderborn. The first game played in Wolfsburg ended goalless, while in the second leg Paderborn won after extra time.
Wolfsburg took the lead in the third minute with a goal Dženan Pejčinović. Konstantinos Koulierakis sent a long ball to Adam Daghim, who passed on the wing, and a return ball to Pejčinović, who scored a nice shot to give the visitors the lead.
However, only 11 minutes later Wolfsburg remained with one player less. Joakim Maehle was “yellowed” twice in the space of only four minutes, leaving his teammates stranded. Maehle’s dismissal was by far the earliest in Bundesliga survival playoff history.
The home team equalized in the 39th minute with a goal Philip Bilbia. Laurin Curda threw in from outside, Calvin Brackelmann headed the ball to the far post where Bilbi did his best to make it 1-1.
In the rest of the match, it was practically a one-goal game. Paderborn had a series of chances, twice shaking the frame of the opponent’s goal, but Wolfsburg defended successfully until the 100th minute, when Curda checked Kamil Grabar after Sven Michel’s cross.
Wolfsburg had the best chance to equalize in the 120th minute when Kento Shiogai headed in, but Dennis Seimen made a great save.
How much is it Paderborn was dominant shows and data of as many as 39 shots against six opponents, and 19 corners, while Wolfsburg had only two.
Lovro Majer did not perform for the visitors who move to the second league after almost 30 years. Paderborn became the first second division team after 2019 to win promotion through the playoffs by defeating a club from the first division.
Union Berlin managed to do it last against Stuttgart.
