Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who will retire in September, concluded a two-year investigation by concluding that there was enough evidence to accept the indictment against Sanchez’s wife, reports Hina.
After Pedro Sanchez became prime minister in the summer of 2018, his wife was given a chair at the Complutense University in Madrid, where she participated in the management of a postgraduate study. Allegedly, in that role, she signed letters of recommendation to companies that requested state aid.
She is suspected of receiving money from those companies in return “not for a public University chair, but as personal property”.
Gómez, who is currently in China on Pedro Sanchez’s official trip to the country, has previously maintained her innocence.
Spain’s leftist government also came to her defense on Monday. Justice Minister Félix Bolaños said in an address to the media that he “absolutely believes” that the higher court will be “just” and ultimately overturn Judge Peinado’s ruling because “there is nothing” in the case.
