About 200,000 people took part in anti-Iranian government demonstrations in Munich on Saturday, police said, as world leaders gathered nearby for a security conference.
Demonstrators gathered at Munich’s Theresienwiese fairground, denouncing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s government after a deadly crackdown on protests across the country in January.
Some participants carried flags with the symbol of a lion and sun on a green-white-red background – a symbol of the monarchy overthrown in 1979.
Human rights organizations report that thousands of protesters have been killed in Iran during the protests.
Rallies calling for international action against Tehran are also planned in Toronto and Los Angeles.
The son of the deposed Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, who has been living in exile since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, addressed the participants of the Munich Security Conference and called on US President Donald Trump to “help” the Iranian people.
Pahlavi also requested external “humanitarian intervention to prevent further killing of innocent people” in Iran.

The Theresienwiese, where the big folk festival Oktoberfest takes place every year, is less than three kilometers from the venue of the security conference.
Last week, around 10,000 people gathered in Berlin for a protest organized at the invitation of the MEK, an exiled opposition group that Tehran authorities consider a terrorist organization.
