German politician Carsten Träger (52) collapsed on Saturday in Tyrol, on a ski slope on the Stubai glacier.
The Social Democratic politician was transported to a hospital in Innsbruck, where he later died, Kronen Zeitung reports.
Träger has been a member of the Bundestag for many years, and since May 2025 he has held the position of State Secretary in the German Federal Ministry for the Environment.
After his sudden death, flags were flown at half-mast at the German Bundestag in Berlin. This was announced on Sunday by the Speaker of the Parliament, Julia Klöckner (CDU).
“We are deeply shaken. His death leaves a void that cannot be filled,” said Matthias Miersch, head of the SPD parliamentary group.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
