The Croatian USKOK launched a large-scale operation of arrests and urgent evidentiary actions due to suspicion of organized car theft, and the investigation is being carried out simultaneously in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
By order of USKOK, the action on the ground is led by the Zagreb Police Department, and the action covers Zagreb and several other locations in Croatia. Investigators suspect that several people were involved in car thefts that are part of a criminal organization.
In cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, urgent evidentiary actions are being carried out at several locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which indicates the cross-border nature of the criminal group and the coordinated action of the competent institutions of the two countries.
USKOK announced that they are in the process of arresting and carrying out evidentiary actions against persons who are suspected to have participated in criminal acts of vehicle theft within an organized criminal network. After questioning the suspects, USKOK will decide on further action, about which the public will be informed in a timely manner.
According to information obtained by Jutarnji list, the suspects stole a dozen mid-range cars in Zagreb, including Citroen, Ford and Volkswagen vehicles. Investigators are also checking possible resale channels and possible transport of stolen vehicles outside of Croatia.
Competent institutions are not revealing additional details for now, stressing that the investigation is at a sensitive stage and that more information can be expected after all investigations are completed and key evidence is collected.
