Musk claims that Altman and Greg Brockman have betrayed OpenAI’s original mission—that artificial intelligence serve humanity—and turned it into a “wealth-making machine” for themselves and investors.
The world’s richest man is seeking $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft, one of its biggest investors. According to his request, the money would be directed to the humanitarian arm of OpenAI. It also calls for OpenAI to become a non-profit again and for Altman and Brockman to be removed from their positions.
Musk says he has secured about $38 million in seed capital for OpenAI, founded in 2015 with Altman, with the goal of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity and in response to competitors like Google.
On the other hand, OpenAI claims that Musk knew about the transition to a for-profit model and that he supported it, and that he only filed the lawsuit after he failed to become a director. They also state that he founded his own AI company xAI in 2023 to compete with OpenAI.
Musk, Altman, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella are expected to testify during the trial. The trial could further complicate OpenAI’s plans to go public and heighten public concerns about the development of artificial intelligence.
