Štapić accidentally swallowed a stick back in 2018 while eating while intoxicated, but he requested the operation only recently, writes Unilad.
After swallowing the stick, the man known only as Wang, 46, went for a check-up where doctors advised him to undergo surgery which would involve an incision in his neck. Out of fear of such a procedure, he refused surgery and decided to live with a metal object in his throat, suffering discomfort and pain for years.
During those eight years, he reported occasional discomfort when eating, but had no breathing problems. He convinced himself that it was a normal reaction to alcohol consumption. He sought medical help only when the pain increased significantly and swallowing became very difficult.
As he could no longer ignore the pain, he turned to the doctors at Dalian City Hospital. Fortunately, surgeons successfully removed the chopstick through his mouth using a minimally invasive method, thus avoiding cutting his neck.
“He told us that a chopstick was stuck in his throat,” said Dr. Huang Weipeng for South China Post. “At first I thought it just happened, but he said it was eight years ago,” he added. Fortunately, the wand did not seriously damage his vocal cords, and a full recovery is expected. Wang was released from the hospital just days after the operation.
This is not the only such medical case from China. Last year, doctors removed a toothbrush from the intestines of a 64-year-old man who came to the hospital with abdominal pain. An examination revealed that a 17-centimeter-long toothbrush was found in the body of a 52-year-old man identified as Yang.
He told doctors that he remembered swallowing a toothbrush when he was just 12 years old, but was too afraid to tell his parents. Yang believed that the brush would eventually dissolve on its own and continued to live as if nothing had happened, until decades later pain forced him to seek help.
