A 39-year-old man suspected of putting mouse poison in baby food

Five “manipulated” jars of one type of baby food from German manufacturer HiPP were safely found last month in Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia before they were consumed, German police said at the time. A sixth jar, believed to be in Austria, has not yet been found.

“Today we managed to arrest the suspect, a 39-year-old man,” said a police spokesman in the eastern province of Burgenland, where the contaminated jar was found, without revealing other details as it could jeopardize the investigation.

Earlier today, the Kronen Zeitung newspaper said the man was arrested in the province of Salzburg, which borders Germany.

And while HiPP did not disclose details of the extortion, Austrian newspaper Die Presse reported shortly after the case was revealed that an email was sent to HiPP in March demanding two million euros within six days, but that the company did not notice the message until two weeks after the deadline.

HiPP said the email was sent to a group address that is not checked that often, reports Hina.
