Fifty-eight people died of cholera, and more infected than 250 in the state of Bauchi in northeastern Nigeria, on Friday, led to the establishment of new efforts to react in emergencies and prevention.
The disease, which spreads with contaminated food and water, is not unusual in Nigeria, where health officials state a widespread shortage of clean water in rural areas and urban slaters.
– State Bauchi recorded no less than 258 new cases and 58 deaths – said Deputy Governor Auwal Mohammed Jatau on the inauguration of two committees.
– These epidemics can often prevent timely interventions, coordinated responses and sustainable improvements in water supply, sanitation and hygiene – he said.
The aim of the committee is to centralize the answer and harmonize long-term prevention strategies with the National Cholera Control and the NECDC, NCDC, added the Jatau.
In the last two years, Nigeria recorded more than 11,000 suspicious cases of cholera and over 400 deaths, and children under the age of five make up most infections, according to the NCDC.
