Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement on Friday that his country could help unblock the Strait of Hormuz, whose closure by Iran has shaken the global economy.
Iran has a tight grip on a key shipping route – threatening fuel supplies and upsetting the global economy – in retaliation for the US-Israeli attacks that sparked the Middle East war.
– No one specifically involved us in the issue of the Strait of Hormuz. During my visits, I told the representatives of the Middle East and the countries of the Persian Gulf: Ukraine is ready to help in everything related to defense – said Zelensky.
On Thursday, he spoke to a small group of reporters, including AFP. He did not specify how Ukraine could contribute, but cited Kiev’s experience in restoring the passage through the Black Sea, which Russia blocked at the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine fears being marginalized as the world turns its attention to the war in the Middle East.
Kiev has sought to use its expertise to counter the Russian invasion, as Ukrainian armed forces shoot down Russian drones similar to those used by Iran in attacks on Persian Gulf countries.
Last week, Zelensky visited several Middle Eastern countries and signed military agreements with Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
– I believe that we have changed the attitude of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region towards Ukraine for many years – said Zelenski.
