Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei suffered a broken foot and other minor injuries on the first day of the US and Israeli bombing campaign, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.
In addition to his injured foot, Khamenei suffered a bruise around his left eye as well as minor cuts on his face, the source said.
An Israeli source previously told CNN that Khamenei was injured in an assassination attempt last week, and rumors of Khamenei’s injuries have been circulating for days.
Khamenei has not been seen in public or heard from in the days since his appointment to the country’s highest office was announced following the death of his father, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian state media and propaganda networks have made extensive use of archival footage and AI-generated images of Mojtaba Khamenei, CNN claims.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s son, Yousef, said on Wednesday morning that he had heard Khamenei was injured, telling state news agency ISNA that the new supreme leader was “safe and there are no concerns”.
