The US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68), the US Navy’s oldest active supercarrier, is currently operating in the Caribbean Sea, the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has confirmed.
It is the first presence of an American aircraft carrier in the region since the USS Gerald R. Ford was deployed to the Middle East in February.
SOUTHCOM said on the X social network: “Welcome to the Caribbean, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group,” noting that the carrier and accompanying ships represent the pinnacle of the US Navy’s readiness and strategic advantage.
The arrival of the USS Nimitz coincided with the information from the US Department of Justice that former Cuban President Raul Castro was charged with murder for his alleged role in the downing of two US civilian planes in 1996, reports Forbes.

US President Donald Trump said that Cuba is once again in the focus of the administration in Washington. The United States has maintained an almost complete blockade of the island for years, leading to fuel shortages and frequent power outages.
“It’s very important. It was a big moment for Cubans in the United States, but also for people who want to see their families in Cuba again,” Trump said after the announcement of the indictment against Castro.
The USS Nimitz is currently sailing toward its new home port in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Due to its size, it could not pass through the Panama Canal, so it continued sailing along the route around South America through the Strait of Magellan.
