The USA advanced to the semifinals of the tournamentof the United Cup teams after beating Greece 2-1 in Perth on Wednesday.
Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam winner, defeated Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-2 after an hour and 26 minutes of play to give the USA the lead.
Sakkari showed some resistance, winning three straight games, but Gauff held her serve and won the first set before breaking the Greek twice in the second set to secure the win, reports Hina.
Greece was brought back into the game by Stefanos Tsitsipas who then beat world number nine Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-5 to even the score.
But in the mixed doubles game where Tsitsipas and Sakkari were on one side and Gauff and Christian Harrison on the other side, USA won 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Switzerland will face Argentina later on Wednesday, while the Czech Republic will play Belgium and Poland will play Australia tomorrow in Sydney.
The tournament in Perth and Sydney, in which 18 countries participate, serves as a warm-up for the first Grand Slam tournament of the Australian Open season.
