In a rare joint press conference, US President Donald Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel presented the results of the operation, during which 8,700 people suspected of violent crimes were arrested.
Patel said that more than 2,200 weapons, 44 tons of cocaine and 421 kilograms of fentanyl were seized, and that more than 2,000 indictments were filed. The FBI, he said, also arrested a suspect in a 2021 bombing in Afghanistan that killed 13 American soldiers and 170 civilians.
Trump and Patel told the FBI that agents would receive salaries despite the suspension of funding to government agencies. However, the joint appearance drew attention because FBI directors traditionally avoid direct political ties to presidents.
In the political portion of the speech, Trump criticized special counsel Jack Smith and his investigation into classified documents and the attack on Congress. He called the investigation “the worst abuse of justice against a political opponent in the history of the world.” The investigation was suspended after the November election.
According to American media, Patel is close to Trump’s plan to “show up” with former opponents, including former FBI chief James Comey, New York State Attorney Letitia James and former adviser John Bolton.
