US President Donald Trump has said that the US will take over Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Washington believes the stockpiles are for the development of nuclear weapons, while Tehran claims they are intended solely for civilian purposes.
“We’re going to get it. We don’t need it, we don’t want it. We’ll probably destroy it after we get it, but we’re not going to let them have it,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei issued a directive that uranium should not be sent abroad, two senior Iranian sources told Reuters ahead of Trump’s comments.
Trump also objected to Tehran’s plans to charge tolls for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz off its coast, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas passed before the war.
“We want it open, we want it free. We don’t want to pay fees. It’s an international waterway,” Trump said.
