The Pentagon’s chief spokesman, Sean Parnell, posted on the X social network that the incident occurred during a meeting with key local leaders. “Their mission was to support ongoing operations against ISIS and counter-terrorism operations in the region,” Parnell said. He added that the names of those killed will not be published until their families are notified, reports Index.hr.
Defense Minister Pete Hegseth confirmed that the attacker was killed by partner forces and sent a strong message. “Let it be known, if you target Americans, anywhere in the world, you will spend the rest of your short, anxious life knowing that the United States will hunt you down, find you, and kill you mercilessly,” Hegseth wrote on Xu.
According to the official Syrian news agency SANA, US soldiers came under fire during a joint patrol with Syrian forces in central Syria. Due to the incident, traffic on the highway between Deir Ezzor and Damascus was stopped, and American fighter jets were seen in the sky.
“American helicopters intervened to evacuate the wounded to the al-Tanf base after the shooting incident,” SANA said, referring to the American base in eastern Syria along the border with Iraq.
