United States Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Washington has serious doubts about Russian claims that Ukraine attacked the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking to Fox Business on the Varney & Co show, Whitaker stressed that for now there is no clear confirmation that the incident actually happened and that he expects insight into US intelligence.
“It’s not clear if that even happened,” Whitaker said, recalling that Ukraine has completely rejected the Russian accusations.
He added that he found it unconvincing that Ukraine, at a time when there is talk of a possible peace agreement, would take a move that could appear reckless and counterproductive.
Russian authorities said Ukraine allegedly carried out an attack on the presidential palace in the Novgorod region using 91 long-range drones. Moscow has said that a response will follow and that its negotiating stance will be significantly toughened.
Official Kiev rejected these accusations as untrue, stating that it was an attempt to justify new attacks on Ukraine.
Ukraine’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that Russia had not offered any evidence because, he said, the evidence did not exist.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Putin told him during a phone call that Ukraine tried to attack his residence.
Trump said that this information made him very angry, and when asked if there was concrete evidence of the attack, he answered briefly: “We will find out”, reports Index.hr.
