In a statement posted on the presidency’s website, Aliyev also offered his condolences on the death of his father, former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“Once again, I express my condolences on the tragic death of your father, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,” the statement said.
The message emphasized that the relations between Azerbaijan and Iran are based on the history of neighborhood and friendship, with expressed hope for joint efforts to develop interstate relations based on mutual respect and trust.
“I express the hope that with joint efforts we will work on the development of our interstate relations in the spirit of mutual respect and trust, in the interest of our peoples,” it added.
His message comes after several incidents in which Iranian drones reportedly hit targets on the territory of Azerbaijan. Iranian authorities said they were not targeting Azerbaijani territory, while media reports suggested the drones could be diverted by countermeasures.
Mojtaba Khamenei (56) became the third supreme leader of Iran in history. Iranian officials describe his election as a step towards strengthening national unity.
The previous Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei held the post for 37 years. His house in Tehran was hit in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, killing the 86-year-old leader.
