The National Security Board of the Israeli Kneset was approved on a Sunday’s proposal to introduce the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, which opened the journey for his first reading in the full convocation of parliament.
The proposal was adopted with four votes for and one against, despite the opposition of the Legal Adviser to the Committee, who claimed that the vote could not be held during the parliamentary break. The Legal Department of the Board later warned that the decision “nullid”, pointing out that the competent security and professional institutions were not consulted, as the procedure required.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his envoy for galage issues Gal Hirs advocated that the debate on this proposal is limited to the cabinet, but the board still held a session.
The deputies of the opposition called the move “illegal” and criticized the procedure sharply.
The law now goes before KNESSET on the first reading, although legal controversies are expected to continue to last about how adoption.
