The head of the WHO is worried about the speed of the spread of the virus: We already have 500 infected and 130 dead

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that he is deeply concerned about the scale and speed of the Ebola epidemic as the number of cases rises.

Since the beginning of the new epidemic, there have been at least 500 cases of infection and 130 deaths suspected to be related to Ebola, said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Also, in the Ugandan capital Kampala, one death was confirmed and a case of infection in two individuals who traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where 30 cases of infection were confirmed in the northeastern province of Ituri, he said.

– These numbers will change as field operations intensify, including strengthening surveillance, contact tracing and laboratory testing, Ghebreyesus told WHO members meeting in Geneva this week.

A WHO emergency committee is scheduled to meet later on Tuesday to discuss the Ebola outbreak, Ghebreyesus said.

The emergency committee consists of international experts who advise the leader of the organization.

There are several factors that worry the WHO about the possible further spread of the infection, such as cases in urban areas, including Kampala and Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the conflict-affected province of Ituri, writes Reuters.

Cases recorded among healthcare workers also point to the spread of infection in medical facilities, said Ghebreyesus.
