The European Union plans great changes when it comes to driving licenses for older drivers.
According to the new European Commission proposal, all drivers over 70 will have to go through stricter medical checks, and the possibility of introducing a practical driving exam is also being considered.
The aim of these measures is to increase the safety on the roads, but the proposal is already causing controversy across Europe. Although individual countries already have certain requirements for older drivers, so far there has been no single EU level system.
The introduction of stricter rules could mean the end of unconditional extension of older drivers, and the potential obligation to take a practical exam could further complicate the situation.
When it comes to a practical exam, many Member States have tried to introduce it in the past, including Greece, but for various reasons have never been implemented, transfers business.ba.
Currently, there is no age limit for obtaining a driver’s license, and the law stipulates that drivers from 65 years have to a medical examination in two doctors every three years. After 80. years, reviews become more frequent and involve more medical specialists.
