According to the new decision, the match of the penultimate, 37th round of Serie A will be played on Monday at 20:45 instead of Sunday at 12:30, as originally decided by the management of the competition.
Concern for maintaining public order, traffic mobility and the overlap with the final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome were cited as the reason for the change of date. The final match of the tennis tournament in the Foro Italico, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Olympic Stadium, is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m.
That is why the city authorities decided that the high-risk derby between Roma and Lazio and the final of a major tennis tournament will not be held on the same day.
However, it is expected that Serie A will appeal this decision due to the specific situation in the fight for placement in European competitions. Namely, since last year, the rule has been in force according to which teams fighting for the same position in the table must play matches in the same time slot during the last two rounds of the championship.
Roma are currently in the battle for a place in the Champions League along with Napoli, Juventus, Milan and Como, so moving the Rome derby could cause a chain of schedule changes.
This would mean that the other matches of the teams involved in the fight for the Champions League would have to be moved from Sunday to Monday in the evening. These are the duels Como – Parma, Genoa – Milan, Juventus – Fiorentina and Pisa – Napoli.
