As part of the municipal event “Tešnja City Days 2025”, a two-day scientific conference “Islamic values and modernity – what kind of mission do we need” started last night in Tešnj.
The conference was opened in the atrium of Majlis Tešanj by Mufti Hafiz of Zenica, dr. Mevludin-ef. Dizdarević, in addition to whom the director of the Administration for Religious Affairs, Hafiz dr., addressed the audience. Mensur-ef. Malkić, chief imam of Majlis Tešanj mr. Fuad-ef. Omerbašić and chief Tešnja mr. Suad Huskić.
– Every responsible theological opinion, every responsible Islamic opinion has the task of questioning the actuality of its statement, the actuality of its own interpretation, because the world is in constant change.
And in order for Islamic opinion, for theological opinion to be and remain relevant, and it is relevant if it affects reality, it must go either ahead of reality or in step with reality.
– And on top of that, of course, it is our ambition, it is our desire to gather through this conference teams of serious researchers, more or less established scientists, who, by questioning the various phenomena of the emergence of Islam, religion as such in social reality, will answer the question of what kind of Islamic thought we need, what position of faith and religious discourse we need in the modern world, and that is the ambition we have set. We hope that the works that will be published in the collection of works will follow this matrix of ours and we appreciate that the theory that will be produced, and the theory is primarily the best statement, evidence of the development of a certain community, so that it will be a responsible approach and our response to the current reality – said Mufti Dizdarević.
Director Malkić expressed his satisfaction with the fact that this scientific conference is being held in Tešnje and that, taking into account the joint organization, it is important to continuously discuss and exchange opinions.
Otherwise, the conference is realized by the Directorate for Religious Affairs of the Rijaset of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Mufti of Zenica and the Majlis of the Islamic Community in Tešanj.
– We hope that here, through the lectures that we will have the opportunity to listen to these two days from eminent lecturers and professors, we will have the opportunity to develop our strategy even better in the future, and related to the mission of the Islamic Community here in our areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Of course, our mission is primarily a mission that is based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace.
And that mission, we can say for sure, through the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was one of the most important factors for the preservation of us as a people and us as Muslims in these areas – said director Malkić.
This is the second scientific conference of the Mejlis Tešanj in two years, which is another indicator of how this Mejlis is a very organized unit within the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Chief imam Omerbašić said that last year the Mejlis marked 140 years of institutional organization of the Islamic community, and on that occasion, a compendium was prepared this year.
– Now we have a scientific conference that needs to question modernity in such a way that we have values that are heritage, which are the Sunnah principles that Muhammad, peace be upon him, shared with the first generation of Muslims. And it was a community of Muslims, and in our country it is called the Islamic Community.
In this sense, I think that it is important today, when we have this stability, but also the environment in which we find ourselves, that we constantly question how credible we are to those values, bearing in mind that and how much we can understand the Islamic community as our framework in the coming period.
Eminent experts who will speak tonight and tomorrow tell us that this is a very interesting topic, a topic that deserves attention – said Effendija Omerbašić.
Mayor Huskić said that the conference is symbolically held on the occasion of Tešnj City Day, December 10, on the date when the history of urban development of this city began with the endowment of Gazi Ferhad-bey from 1559.
– Nothing happens by chance. This is part of a constant effort to discuss and examine our reality and Islamic tradition and the environment of living in Tešnje and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After the official opening of the Conference, the first session was held in which the following presented their scientific works: hafiz dr. Mensur-ef. Malkić – “The Mission of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina Society,” rector of the University of Tuzla, prof. Ph.D. Amir Karić – “Politics in the Islamic community and the Islamic community in politics” and mufti for Western Europe Senaid-ef. Kobilica – “The Islamic community in Western Europe – a response to Islamophobia”.
It is planned that the conference will continue tomorrow, starting at 9:30 a.m., at the seat of the Mejlis Tešanj, writes Revival.
