Monday’s attacks in predominantly Alawite neighborhoods of the city of Latakia came after three people, including a member of the security forces, were killed a day earlier, as thousands protested in the coastal center of the minority over a deadly mosque bombing.
State television reported that security forces in the coastal province of Latakia arrested 21 members of “remnants of the former regime who are involved in criminal acts, sectarian incitement and targeting of internal security forces.”
Hundreds of Alawites were killed in sectarian massacres in the community’s coastal center in March.
The new Syrian government has repeatedly stated that it does not discriminate between Syrians on the basis of religion or ethnicity and that it is committed to protecting all citizens, reports AFP.
