Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has issued an order preventing the export of enriched uranium from the country, according to two senior Iranian sources.
According to their statements, the Iranian leadership believes that sending uranium abroad could further weaken the country’s security position and make Iran more vulnerable to possible future attacks by the United States of America and Israel.
Khamenei’s decision could further complicate the negotiations between Washington and Tehran, but also make it difficult to reach an agreement to end the conflict between Iran, the US and Israel.
Israeli officials previously told Reuters that US President Donald Trump had assured the Israeli side that Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium would be moved outside of Iran, and that such a provision should be an integral part of any peace agreement.
Iran continues to reject accusations that it is developing nuclear weapons, maintaining that its nuclear program is purely peaceful in nature.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will not consider the war over until enriched uranium is removed from Iran, Tehran ends support for regional militant groups and Iran’s ballistic missile program is halted.
