Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner took a new step towards winning the third Australian Open in a row by reaching the semifinals of this year’s edition of the first Grand Slam of the season.
Sinner, the second seed at Melbourne Park, is in the quarter-finals with confidence 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 beat eighth-ranked American Ben Shelton.
With this victory, the Italian tennis player joined world tennis legends Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Ivan Lendl and Rafael Nadal as the fifth player who managed to win at least six consecutive semi-finals at Grand Slam tournaments. The record holder is Federer with 23 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals.

In the semifinals, Sinner will face a ten-time winner of the Australian Open and the fourth seed of this year’s edition of the tournament, a Serb. Novak Djokovic to whom second Italian Lorenzo Musetti surrendered the quarterfinal match due to a groin injury he suffered at the beginning of the third set.
Musetti won the first two sets 6-4, 6-3 and it seemed that he was on his way to his first semi-final in Melbourne, but at the beginning of the third set he was injured, even medical treatment did not help him, so he decided to surrender when Djokovic was leading 3-1 in that part of the match.
This is the second consecutive match in which Đoković passes after surrendering his opponent, in the round of 16 he didn’t even have to go on the court because the Czech Jakub Menšik surrendered to him without a fight.
On Tuesday, the first and third seeds, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and German Alexander Zverev won the semifinals.
