It is a clear allusion to the Ustasha criminal Vjekoslav Maks Luburić and his “butchers”. That’s what they called the Ustasha members who, under Luburić’s command, abused and killed numerous Serbs, Jews, Roma, and Croats who were opponents of the Ustasha regime in the Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška camps.
This action of Benfica fans caused outrage in Serbia. The local media write: “After the fight between Torcida and Deli, the Benfica fans expressed their support for the Hajduk fans with a shameful banner that glorifies Ustasha crimes.”
Let’s remind you that in 2019, Torcida displayed a banner with the inscription during the matches against Rijeka, Inter from Zaprešić, Gorica and Istra “Max’s Butchers”. Because of this, after the match between Hajduk and Istra, the Split police filed a misdemeanor charge against the 22-year-old who was linked to displaying the banner at Poljud, Index reported.
