In connection with the allegations of the case in the public kindergarten in the center of Paris, 16 people were arrested this morning and taken into police custody, Le Monde newspaper reported, citing the prosecutor’s office. The suspects are charged with rape of minors, sexual abuse of minors and violence against children, the investigative body confirmed for this newspaper.
For months, parents and politicians in Paris have been troubled by reports of violence and abuse in the city’s long-term care and school facilities, which do not always seem to be adequately investigated. The issue of abuse was recently also a topic in the campaign for local elections in the French capital.
Investigations in more than 100 institutions
Investigations have been launched against 84 kindergartens, around 20 primary schools and 10 extended stays for children, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in an interview with RTL on Sunday. “All Paris arrondissements are affected,” she stated.
According to the newly elected mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, since the beginning of the year, 78 school employees have been suspended, of which 31 are suspected of sexual violence. During 2025, a total of 30 workers were suspended, 16 of whom were suspected of sexual violence.
The mayor announced an action plan worth 20 million euros, which includes quick and transparent reporting of suspicious cases, strengthening the involvement and support of parents, and infrastructure improvements. “We have to fundamentally rethink everything, with one goal: zero tolerance,” said the socialist mayor.
