“If NATO strategists come up with such an insane idea as attacking Russia, they should have no doubt that we will respond with all available means,” she said during the briefing.
Zakharova noted that Russia has no plans to attack NATO countries, but that security measures are already being taken in the context of strengthening the Alliance’s contingents near the Russian borders.
“We are ready for any development, always starting from the primacy of peace, friendship and equal cooperation,” she added.
Zakharova pointed out that the dialogue between Moscow and Washington has been ongoing since the inauguration of the new administration of President Donald Trump, but, as she assessed, it is not happening fast enough, reports Interfax.
“With the arrival of the new administration, we felt a significant desire or willingness on their part to continue the dialogue. That is happening. Of course, not as quickly as we would like,” Zaharova said.
She noted that there was no contact between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s meeting with Trump in Anchorage, Alaska in August and the subsequent phone conversation.
“The heads of diplomacy of our countries have reached an agreement on the need for regular communication. This is important for discussing the Ukrainian issue and improving the bilateral agenda. These contacts will continue. They will continue whenever the need arises,” said the spokeswoman of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Zakharova also emphasized that Moscow remains ready to host a new Russian-American meeting.
“We remain ready to hold the second Russian-American summit in Budapest if it really builds on the well-developed results achieved in Alaska,” concluded Zakharova.
