US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that the Thursday deadline set by President Donald Trump for Ukraine to accept the US peace proposal is actually flexible.
– The deadline is to finish this as soon as possible. Of course, we would like it to be on Thursday… We have really made a big move and I am very optimistic that we will reach a solution in a very reasonable time, very quickly – said Rubio in Geneva.
– Whether it’s Thursday, Friday, Wednesday or Monday next week, we want it to be soon, because people are going to die – he added.
Rubio said the US recognizes Ukraine’s need for security guarantees as part of the peace proposal, but did not go into details of the talks.
– I think we all understand that ending this war will require Ukraine to feel safe and confident that it will never be attacked again – Rubio said.
When asked about a possible phone conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Rubio said that such a conversation was “possible” but that he was not sure if it would happen.
