The United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, for which Donald Trump did not consult NATO beforehand. Key European allies have expressed doubts about the necessity of war, disputing US-Israeli claims of an imminent Iranian nuclear threat, especially after Tehran’s retaliation sent global oil prices soaring.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez denounced the war as illegal and refused permission for US aircraft to use bases in his country.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Iran was “humiliating” the United States in the talks, angering Donald Trump, who announced the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany.
– I have always strongly defended NATO throughout my career, said Rubio, a former senator.
– I know why NATO is good for Europe, but why is NATO good for America?, he asked.
NATO foreign ministers are meeting Thursday and Friday in Helsingborg in southern Sweden to discuss support for Ukraine and prepare for the alliance’s next summit in July in Turkey.
