Indiana’s Republican Senate voted 31-19 on Thursday against a bill to redistrict, a measure Trump and his allies have pushed for months as a way to reshape Indiana’s congressional map to potentially give Republicans two more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In a rare defiance of Trump within his own party, 21 Republican senators from Indiana joined all Democratic senators in voting against the proposal, preventing it from being reconsidered before the 2027 session.
The decision drew sharp criticism from state and national Republican leaders who supported the initiative. Comments from President Trump, Gov. Mike Brown and Republican Party leadership hinted at possible retaliation against lawmakers who violated party discipline.
From the Oval Office, President Trump expressed his displeasure with the proposal’s rejection and specifically criticized the leadership of the Indiana Senate, naming Republican Senate Speaker Rodrick Bray, who voted against the bill.
“You have a gentleman, the head of the Senate, I mean Brey, whatever his name is… He’s probably going to lose the next intra-party election,” Trump said, adding that Indiana’s Republican Senate had done a lot of damage, according to WTYI.
Despite criticism and announcements of consequences, Senate President Rodrick Bray said he was not concerned about threats from Washington and said Indiana would continue to function.
