Officers seized more than C$3.5 million (US$2.53 million) worth of counterfeit goods from a warehouse in Mississauga, including more than 16,000 fake jerseys and flags with fake FIFA, Nike, Adidas and Puma logos, as well as two fake World Cup trophies.
Two men were arrested and charged, police said.
Toronto is expecting more than 300,000 visitors during the World Cup, and six games will be played in the city, including Canada’s first game against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12, as well as Croatia and Panama on June 24.
A complaint to the FIFA Planning Team Investigative Unit of the Toronto Police Service in May alleges that the accused supplied retail stores with products and acted as distributors of counterfeit goods. The estimated street value of the items is C$3,564,000, police said.
