German police have carried out numerous raids in four federal states in response to hundreds of e-mails in which senders threatened to bomb schools, train stations and other public buildings, the Federal Criminal Police Office said today.
German police raided the states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Hesse. At the forefront of the investigation are four people, including two minors. The group is accused of being responsible for hundreds of emails containing fake bomb threats across the country.
The police have intervened in hundreds of cases because of e-mails. According to the prosecutors, the aim of the messages was to disrupt public order with threats in order to provoke as many police operations as possible and create as much uncertainty as possible among the population, reports the German news agency dpa.
– Although the criminal acts did not cause any damage, the evacuation measures in Germany caused enormous material damage – officials said. Last year, the messages led to the evacuation of a shopping center in the city of Essen, the temporary closure of a train station in Neunkirchen and a school in Bad Hersfeld.
