The Prime Minister of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, Nezir Pivić, and the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Mirza Mušija, today hosted a reception for the team from the Faculty of Law of the University of Zenica, which won first place at the IV national competition in a simulated trial before the European Court of Human Rights “Ius versus Iustitiam”, held in Mostar.
The aforementioned competition was jointly organized by the Faculty of Law of the University of Mostar, the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the competition of teams from all public universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, third-year students Lamija Bašić and Jasmina Bajrić and fourth-year students Ajna Alispahić and Ema Buro were better than the team from the Faculty of Law of the University of Mostar in the final match. The submission of the Zenica team won second place in the written phase of the competition, which placed the team in the first strong group, while in the oral phase student Lamija Bašić won the prize for the best speaker. Together with the state champions, today’s reception in Canton was attended by the dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Zenica, prof. Ph.D. Enis Omerovic.
With this victory, the Faculty of Law of the University of Zenica confirmed the continuity of excellence and the high quality of practical legal education, which further strengthened the title of the most awarded law faculty among public universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Prime Minister Pivić awarded the national champions with a cash prize in the amount of 1,000 KM each and wished them much success in their further work and academic advancement.
One of the conclusions of today’s reception and conversation between Prime Minister Pivić, Minister Mušija, Dean Omerović and trainer Zilić is the expressed desire for the Faculty of Law of the University of Zenica to once again participate in the world’s most prestigious competitions in trial simulation – the competition in international criminal law held in The Hague and the prestigious competition in international commercial law and international commercial arbitration “Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot”, which is held in Vienna.
The Zenica-Doboj Canton will financially support the teams that will be preparing for these competitions in order to represent the Faculty of Law, the University of Zenica, the Zenica-Doboj Canton and Bosnia and Herzegovina in a worthy manner.
When it comes to the competition in The Hague, which is organized by the University of Leiden, the Grotius Center for International Legal Studies and the World Bar Association, the Faculty of Law of the University of Zenica achieved the best result in 2018, when then-student and current assistant Faris Muratović won the award for the best speaker.
The “Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot” competition, which is traditionally held in Vienna, was created in honor of the distinguished Dutch professor of international commercial law Willem Cornelius Vis, a prominent scientist and one of the most significant authors in the field of international commercial and arbitration law. It is the world’s largest competition for law students, which is also the largest annual international event in the field of commercial and arbitration law, gathering students, professors, lawyers, judges and arbitrators from all over the world.
In 2018, the team of students from the Faculty of Law of the University of Zenica achieved a historic success by placing among the 16 best teams in a total competition of 377 teams from all over the world. Team members – fourth-year students Amina Hasanović, Ajna Mahmić, Emir Živčić and Ibrahim Palalija – won a high third place, which represents the greatest success in the history of the faculty from the former Yugoslavia. A competitor of this team, and today an assistant at the Faculty of Law in Zenica, Amina Hasanović, received the so-called honorable mentionwhich ranked her among the best speakers of the entire competition.
