The Special Department for the Suppression of Corruption, Organized and Intercantonal Crime of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (POSKOK) is repeating the investigation in the case related to the circumstances of the death of 19 people in flash floods in Donja Jablanica in October 2024.
This information is confirmed for Radio Free Europeon Monday, May 18, but POSKOK could not confirm how many people were included in the new investigation.
“We had to repeat the investigative actions due to procedural validity, and new ones were also undertaken, and we are already working on it. Due to certain irregularities found, and in order to collect evidence legally, a decision was made to cancel the order on the investigation of the Prosecutor’s Office of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton,” POSKOK told RSE.
Previously, on March 12, 2026, the chief cantonal prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, in the “Donja Jablanica” case, made a decision which, for procedural reasons, annuls the previously issued order on the investigation of the Konjic Regional Prosecutor’s Office, and returns the case to the previous stage of the procedure.
POSKOK has already returned the case to the Prosecutor’s Office of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton – Konjic Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
In the statement, they stated at the time that, during the reconciliation of the documentation carried out by the employees of the Special Department, “certain technical deficiencies were observed in the file that need to be eliminated, and a new, corrected list of files must be made, sorted and the entire case submitted to the Special Department for a new decision.”
After Donja Jablanica was hit by torrential floods on the night of October 4, 2024, the case was opened by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Croatian National Court.
In earlier announcements from that institution, they stated that the investigation included the company “Sani”, which managed the nearby quarry, from which the stones fell on the houses, and that the role of inspections and other competent services was being examined. In the initial investigation, in addition to the legal entity, the company “Sani”, the investigation was also conducted against four natural persons.
The area of Jablanica in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina suffered the most from the torrential floods, which hit the country at the beginning of October 2024 and left behind 27 victims and millions of dollars worth of damage.
