Social justice is the central theme of Pope Leo’s pontificate. The Pope is at Mass in the Basilica of St. Petra said that the Church “is still marked by old and new poverty”, but that he hopes to be “a mother to the poor, a place of acceptance and justice”.
This Sunday marks the Jubilee of the Poor, one of many such events organized during the holy year, which attract pilgrims from all over the world. It coincides with the World Day of the Poor, an annual celebration introduced by the late Pope Francis in 2017.
After the Mass, the Pope had lunch with the homeless, refugees and the disabled in the Vatican, and other events aimed at helping the poor will be held in Rome. “Therefore, I call on heads of state and world officials to heed the cry of the poorest,” the pope said.
“There can be no peace without justice, and the poor remind us of this in various ways, with their migrations and their cry, which is often suppressed by the myth of prosperity and progress that do not take into account everyone and forget even many creatures, leaving them to their fate,” he added.
In addition to material poverty, the Pope mentioned “numerous moral and spiritual situations” that lead to loneliness. He called on the faithful to be “careful towards others… becoming witnesses of God’s kindness”, reports Hina.
