Although Nawrocki is traveling to Hungary on Wednesday, his visit will be limited exclusively to the meeting of the presidents of the Visegrad Group, reports Euronews.
Marcin Przydacz, head of the Office for International Policy of the Polish President, announced the decision on the X social network. “President K. Nawrocki has decided to limit the program of his visit to Hungary exclusively to the summit of the presidents of the Visegrad Group in Ostrzyhom,” wrote Przydacz.
In the official announcement, it was clarified that in its policy, Poland refers to the legacy of President Lech Kaczyński, who emphasized that the security of Europe depends on solidarity, including in the field of energy.
On the other hand, the Hungarian Prime Minister pointed out after his visit to Moscow that he had secured long-term energy supply from Russia. “Russian energy forms the basis of Hungary’s energy supply, now and in the future,” Orbán said.
Hungary has been granted an indefinite exemption from US sanctions for the use of Russian oil and gas, on which it is heavily dependent, in violation of the European Union’s policy of a complete cessation of imports by 2027. Budapest considers the import of Russian energy to be crucial for the survival of the economy, and Orbán has repeatedly claimed that switching to alternative sources would cause immediate economic collapse.
During the meeting in the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Orbán’s “balanced position” on the war in Ukraine.
The originally planned meeting between Nawrocki and Orbán was previously criticized by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. “Orbán visits Putin, Nawrocki Orbán. Chaos in negotiations on the Witkoff plan, and in Kiev a political crisis,” Tusk wrote on Xu, adding: “Fatal combination.”
