Philippines: Death toll rises to three, 17 missing after building collapse

Rescuers in the Philippines pulled two more people from the rubble of a collapsed construction building, raising the death toll to three, officials said Monday.

The search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

One of the two people found had a pulse when pulled out but later died, said Maria Leah Sajili, an information officer for the regional fire protection bureau, while the other suffered a cardiac arrest while still trapped, Reuters reported.

Officials said an investigation has been launched into the cause of the collapse of a multi-storey building in the city of Angeles, north of the capital Manila.

Rescuers are also working to pull out another body buried under the rubble, Sajili said, but it will be included in the official death toll only after it is pulled out.

The number of missing is 17, and most of them are construction workers who, according to records, were on duty at the construction site at the time of the accident, Sajili added.
