The reason, according to the available information, is a significantly smaller quantity compared to previous Games: instead of the usual 300,000, only 10,000 pieces were provided this year.
Free distribution of contraceptives has been a part of Olympic practice for decades, with the aim of promoting safe sex and taking care of the participants’ sexual health.
In Milan, condoms were packaged with the message “Health above all: prevention and common sense”, and the packaging also featured the symbol of the region, by decision of the Governor of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana.
Although the initiative had support, the limited supplies were quickly used up. An anonymous athlete told the Italian newspaper La Stampa:
“The stock ran out in just three days. We were promised more would arrive, but who knows when.”
For comparison, during the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, 300,000 condoms were distributed to athletes, which was enough for two per participant per day, Sport Klub reports.
The Olympic Village in Milan, called Cortina d’Ampezzo, is a temporary complex with a capacity of 1,400 beds. Athletes are housed in modular units connected by walkways and common areas.
In such conditions, privacy is limited, although there is a relaxation room which is said to be very frequented. It is a dimly lit room that you enter without shoes, with ambient music intended for meditation.
Meanwhile, according to available information, the Canadian national team left the Olympic Village and decided to stay in a five-star hotel during the Games.
