Nobel laureate injured while fleeing Venezuela

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado suffered a spinal injury while fleeing Venezuela on a small boat last week to receive her prize in Oslo, a spokesman for the Venezuelan opposition leader said, confirming a Norwegian media report.

Machado traveled to Norway in defiance of a ten-year travel ban imposed on her by authorities in her home country, after more than a year in hiding. However, due to injury, she was unable to attend the official awarding of the Nobel Prize on Wednesday.

Norwegian daily Aftenposten reported that doctors in Oslo diagnosed Machado with a fractured vertebra, which occurred during a boat trip in bad weather. A spokesperson for the laureate confirmed the accuracy of the report to Reuters, but declined to reveal further details.

According to Reuters sources, Machado left Venezuela at the beginning of last week by boat to the Caribbean island of Curaçao, from where she arrived in Norway via a private plane via the United States.

Maria Corina Machado has announced that she plans to return to Venezuela, with the aim of contributing to a peaceful transition of power from President Nicolas Maduro.
