A woman who was sleeping in a Brooklyn subway station died after she was set on fire Sunday morning, New York police said.

The suspect is a migrant from Guatemala who entered the US in 2018, the police announced.

He “calmly” approached the victim, who was in a sitting position, and probably lit her clothes on fire with a lighter, which caught fire “within a few seconds”, dpa reports.

Emergency services were called to extinguish the fire, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

During that time, the suspect sat quietly at the station, but his act was caught by cameras and witnesses recognized him.

There is no further information about the victim at this time.

The New York subway during the winter months is often a haven for homeless people fleeing the cold.

Currently, the weather is cold in New York, with temperatures dropping to -10 degrees at night, writes dpa.
