At more than 160 of the busiest intersections in Sarajevo, a new adaptive traffic management system was introduced, which brings significant changes for drivers and pedestrians. One of the biggest news is that pedestrians at many intersections will have to press a button to request a green light to cross.
A system set up throughout the city
The system was installed along the main road from Ilidža to Baščaršija, and the goal is more efficient traffic management and reduction of congestion. The old traffic lights were replaced with modern equipment – pedestrian buttons, sound signaling for blind and partially sighted people, rotating cameras, radars, sensors and new traffic light operation programs were installed.
Green button
The new function allows pedestrians to send a request to cross the road by pressing the yellow button. After pressing, the message “Please wait” appears on the screen, and the system then determines the most favorable moment for turning on the green light, in accordance with the current traffic intensity. If the pedestrian does not press the button, the green light can wait much longer at certain intersections, because the system will not register the need to cross.
In this way, unnecessary stopping of vehicles at pedestrian crossings when there are no pedestrians is avoided, which contributes to better traffic flow and more efficient functioning of the so-called “green wave”.
The value of the adaptive traffic management project is 20 million KM, and the investor is the Ministry of Transportation of Sarajevo Canton.
After the commissioning of the new tram line, it is planned to expand the system to the section towards Hrasnica, it says Hayat TV.
