Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said today that she is satisfied with the current Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, after the court acquitted the Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who previously held the position.

An Italian court on Friday acquitted Salvini of charges from 2019 for the kidnapping of more than a hundred migrants on a ship that he blocked from reaching Italy as interior minister at the time, leaving the vessel at sea for nearly three weeks.

“Both Matteo Salvini and I are satisfied with the work of the current interior minister,” Meloni said after the European Union security summit in Finland, when asked if the court’s decision means Salvini will return to his previous post.

Salvini, leader of the anti-immigrant League party, is now transport minister in Meloni’s government. The Italian Prime Minister touched on the issue of illegal migration in Finland, saying that it is a security threat to the European Union, stressing that the alliance must protect its borders from the danger posed by Russia and criminal organizations.

“Confronting the issue of illegal immigration only on the basis of the discussion of solidarity was a mistake in my opinion. The result is that we failed to protect our borders. We want to protect our external borders and we will not allow Russia and criminal organizations to undermine our security,” she stated.
