The Mexican football team opened the 23rd World Cup with a convincing victory over South Africa with a score of 2:0, in a match played at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
The match was played in front of more than 80,000 spectators, and this legendary stadium made history as the first to host the opening ceremony of the World Cup three times.
Mexico set the pace from the start and threatened in the second minute through Raúl Jiménez, whose shot was saved by South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The initiative paid off in the 9th minute when Julian Quiñones took advantage of a defensive error and scored for 1:0, scoring the first goal of the tournament.
Until the end of the first half, the home team controlled the game, and Quiñones hit the post in one situation, confirming the dominance of the Mexicans.
In the rest of the match, the tempo did not decrease, and in the 67th minute, Raúl Jiménez made it 2:0 with a header after a precise cross from Roberto Alvarado.
The game was also marked by exclusions on both sides. South Africa was left with a player less after the red card to Yayi Sithole, while Themba Zwane also received a red card at the end of the match. Also, Mexico was without Cesar Montes after a foul as the last player in the defense.
Despite numerical and disciplinary breaks, Mexico routinely brought the match to an end and registered the first three points of the tournament.
In the same group A, there are also the national teams of South Korea and the Czech Republic, which play their match against each other in the early hours of the morning.
In the following days, the competition continues, and tomorrow’s duel between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the host Canada in Toronto attracts special attention.
