French President Emmanuel Macron called on Iran to use peace talks with the United States to achieve long-term de-escalation, following a telephone conversation with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.
“I called on him to seize the opportunity offered by the talks launched in Islamabad to pave the way for a permanent de-escalation and the achievement of a demanding agreement that would provide firm guarantees of security in the region, including all the countries involved,” Macron wrote in a post on the X network.
He added that he stressed the need for Iran to restore free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, and said that France is ready to contribute to that process.
Macron also emphasized “the importance of full respect for the ceasefire, including in Lebanon”, and stated that France fully supports the efforts of the Lebanese authorities.
Although the United States and Israel have agreed to a two-week truce with Iran, Israel is reportedly continuing operations in Lebanon as part of its pursuit of Hezbollah.
