Lecorna is the current Minister of Armed Forces, and in the function of the Prime Minister he inherits Francois Bayrou, who lost confidence in the National Assembly on Monday.
The new Prime Minister was given the task of “leading consultations with political forces represented in parliament, to adopt the state budget and achieve key agreements for decision-making in the coming months.”
In a statement, the Jelise Palace states that the work of the new Prime Minister will be conducted by the defense of French independence and strength, and by the country’s political and institutional stability, with the assurance of “on these bases, the agreement between political forces, with respect for their beliefs.”
Lecorna will present the proposal for the new government only after consultations with parliamentary parties. His name has already been mentioned for a while as a possible solution, although the president of the National Assembly of Yaël Braun-Pivet was in the last hours.
The appointment caused the turbulent opposition reactions.
The Lucian Leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon said “a sad comedy” and said that “Only Macron’s departure could stop this farce contemptuous to parliament, voters and political dignity.”
The leader of the national gathering of Marina Le Pen assessed that Macron “cracks the last bullet of macroonism, closed in a bunker with a narrow circle loyal,” and added that “after the inevitable new parliamentary elections, the Prime Minister be Jordan Bardella.”
Leaders of the Green, Marina Tondelier, said Macron appointed the Prime Minister “without consultations with the parties won in the last parliamentary elections”, and invited citizens to protests:
