Large explosion in Chinese coal mine, at least 82 dead

At least 82 people died in an explosion at a coal mine in northern China, Chinese state media reported.

According to state news agency Xinhua, the accident happened at the Liushenyu mine in China’s Shanxi province, which is owned by the Tongzhou company. The gas explosion occurred on Friday at 19:29 local time, and at the time of the accident there were 247 miners in the pit.

Rescue teams are still searching for survivors, while the authorities have not yet released the exact cause of the explosion. Earlier it was reported that the miners trapped underground were in critical condition, and that the level of carbon monoxide exceeded the permitted limits.

Shanxi province is considered one of China’s largest coal-producing areas, and mining accidents in China remain frequent despite stricter safety measures in recent years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an immediate rescue operation and a thorough investigation into the crash, urging local authorities to step up security measures to prevent further tragedies.
