In a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Erdoğan said that Turkey is trying to open the door to diplomacy in order to end the war as soon as possible.
Erdogan said that he does not approve of “illegal interventions against Iran and Iran’s targeting of brotherly countries in the region, adding that targeting brotherly countries is not in anyone’s interest and that these actions should be stopped.”
Iranian President Pezeshkian said that the missiles that entered Turkish airspace were not of Iranian origin and that he would conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Turkey has the second largest military within NATO and shares a long border with Iran that has been stable for around 500 years.
No other NATO member has such deep and direct contact with what remains of the regime in Iran. Erdoğan, as he has done before in connection with the war in Ukraine, the crisis in Gaza and several other conflicts, is positioning himself as a potential mediator in the negotiations.
